Missing disk space
An old friend of mine asked me to look at his notebook running Windows 7. One of the partition's full capacity was 210GB. Explored inside the drive and found only one folder with a total capacity of about 800MB but the total free disk space is only 33GB. 100GB is missing!
Unhide hidden and system files using Folder Options to see more files and folders :
Knowing that Windows might have strengthen the security for these folders, i restart the notebook and entered Safe Mode. Inside, i managed to open Recycle Bin's folder and guess what? I found a huge amount of files and it's total of 100GB! It looks like the recycle bin itself has been consuming space after all this while.
Showing that huge amount of files to my friend, i advised him to look at these files before deleting it. There might be some important documents which he lost days ago.
Unhide hidden and system files using Folder Options to see more files and folders :
- Open Windows Explorer and click on Organize drop down button and select Folder and Search Options. Or click on Tools menu and select Folder Options.
- Click View tab and under Advanced Settings, find Hidden files and folders and select Show hidden files, folders and drives. And also uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended). This will reveal all previously hidden files, folders and drives (I would recommend you to uncheck Hide extensions for known file types for various reasons).
